With the internet full of so many websites, it is no longer enough to just have a web presence. You have to ensure that you use SEO so that you can get more traffic to your site. No matter how much effort you put into designing your website and making it too look professional, if you do not follow it up with a mechanism to ensure a flow of traffic, then you are wasting your time. The first question you need to ask yourself is: “What is SEO, and what role does it play?”
The fact is, you cannot ignore the importance of SEO when it comes to making your website popular and marketing it all over the internet. So, where does SEO come in? Well, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) makes it easier for search engines such as Google to find your site and rank it on top of search results using specific search terms. Once you come on top, the likelihood of people clicking on your page increases significantly, and this guarantees you the much needed traffic.
The two techniques used in SEO are: On-page and Off-page.
1) On- page Search Engine Optimization:
In this technique, the optimization is done inside your website using specific keywords through the use of permanent links, user sitemap, Meta description, breadcrumb, page titles, tags, your web content and pictures.
2) Off-page Search Engine Optimization:
This technique improves the position of your website in search engines by focusing on what is outside your website. Some of the way this is done is through the use of guest posts, social networks, article submission, classifieds, social book marks and many others.
Always remember that you have to be professional and careful when using either of these methods. This is because when you over optimize, it could lead to your website being penalized by the search engine. This will consequently affect the amount of traffic your website gets. There is an algorithm used by popular search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo to track websites to ensure that only the reliable websites show up on search results. The algorithms get updated regularly to spot any misuse of the optimization techniques. When they sense that you have been trying to cheat and trick your way into getting better ranking, then you attract a penalty and your site is black listed. It is always very hard to get your website back once it has been penalized.
